As if from a nightmare Jonah Weiss awoke startled, perspiring, with nothing around but blackness and utter silence. Jonah groped the darkness feeling the mattress underneath his body and the thick dusty air passing through the gaps of his fingers. Sitting up he felt the space, like a liquid morph around him and with agitation, lowered his bare feet shuddering at the touch of cold concrete. He pushed himself off the bed with his arms, attempting to stand, but crashed under painfully weak legs onto a pile of debris that shattered under him.
