The Bridport Prize - Annual Competition |
|
|
Hi Folks.
I'm just curious really. In England with have this national award, a very well known one called The BridPort Prize. You whom live in America probably have a similar thing, if not, here's their website so you can see what I mean. http://www.bridpo.../index.htm
Anyway, would any of you enter it - or a similar thing? Do you feel it would be worth it and if you have entered competitions like this before, I would be very interested to know how you did.
Also, how many among you write columns for newspapers/mags etc or short stories? If there are some of you on here that do this type of work, what sort of success have you had? Do you enjoy it? etc.
Thanks |

Hi All,
Okay, at the risk of sounding uber bossy, I'd like to 'talk' to you guys about the following.
With noticing the lack of people commenting on others work I'm here to drum up some enthusiasm!
I know we can't, individually, read everything but I feel that we could manage a good proportion of what is posted if more were to take the time to read and of course comment; otherwise, why is everyone here? There tends to be the same 4 -5 people doing it and it would be great to hear from others, which in turn could bring some new views to the table. (not taking anything away from the regulars though... Personally, my writing would be much less than it is now with out them) and that quite nicely brings me to my point... It's valuable and not enough of you are doing it!
So I put it to you like this guys - on average the norm is that most will post two pieces of material a week and I honestly believe that you should match it with reading others. Think about it; it's rude to think you can post here and expect others to read, comment, rate when you won't return the courtesy, at least once a week for others.
As someone once said to me, "The Den is only as good as it's members."
Okay, I've had my moan - hope this is received well though because I'm only thinking of others. |

The differences of the english language |
|
|
Hi guys,
I have noticed lately that there has been some occasions where people will not achieved max ratings for spelling, myself included and when I look back over the piece all I can see is that there are words spelt differently (i.e, an English spelling rather than American) and as much as I respect all of your opinions I do believe this is wrong to count them as spelling mistakes when it is no more than a difference in the English language.
Now I know most of you are actually American or Canadian so it won't effect most but for people like me and Verm it does.
I have just submitted my seventh chapter and the software on the site was telling me I had around twenty spelling mistakes when I know for our language they are correct so that's what brought me to subject.
Sorry that was a bit of a ramble but I hope you understand what I'm getting at
Any ideas?

I just wanted to share this with you to get your opinions.
I find myself with an internal battle more and more lately.
I will write a scene and will naturally go back over it to check for spelling mistakes etc but i will almost always come to a part - it can be a whole paragraph or just a sentence - that flows perfectly but i know its either not correct grammatically or there is a word there that doesn't quite fit the character etc... I know i must change it and almost always do but it still feels like a struggle.
Does anyone else fight themselves on a frequent bases over what is literally right and what you want to write (if that makes sense). And if you do, what do you usually do to combat it, sedate it?
Thanks guys. |
