Director: James Cameron
Screenwriter: James Cameron
Cast: Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, and Michelle Rodriguez
Well, I used up my gift card and went to see the big blockbuster film of the season. I did not see it in 3D; I just went to a regular theater, grabbed a Coke and a bag of popcorn, and settled in to watch the film. And I found it really, really enjoyable.
James Cameron (Titanic, Aliens, The Abyss,) has given us some huge blockbusters in the past, and Avatar is no exception. His special effects, much like in "Titanic," are superb. And in "Avatar," he gives us a nice, if a bit predictable, plot. Still, it makes for some good storytelling and a very, very stimulating visual experience.
Jake Sully is a marine who has lost the use of his legs due to a combat wound. His brother, a scientist, was scheduled to travel to the planet Pandora to inhabit an avatar, but he was killed in a robbery. Since Jake's DNA matches his brother's perfectly, he is asked to take the assignment. He boards a spaceship, is put in cryogenic suspension, and sets off for Pandora.
Once there, he is put into some sort of chamber that connects him to his avatar. His avatar is another body, and it matches the bodies of the natives of Pandora. In short, Jake's mind is transferred into another body, albeit non-human. Jake, however, has all of his bodily functions when in his avatar. He can run, jump, dance, and play basketball.
As the story progresses, the planet is being mined for a mineral that is very valuable. Just what the mineral does, Cameron does not tell you. Suffice to say, it is very valuable. And Jake Sully is part of a scientific team that is trying to make contact with the very attractive and sexy blue natives of the planet and understand their culture.
As the plot moves along and develops, we are treated to the technology- and profit-worshipping humans who want the mineral and its gains trying to push the very spiritual and in-tune with the planet natives out of the way. Jake actually goes native and helps them win the battle.
There are some pretty good performances here, but I felt that the bad guys were really caricatures. I think Cameron could have toned down the nasty and insensitive guys a bit. Sigourney Weaver, as the scientist heading up the team attempting to understand the native culture, however, is outstanding. But, then again, she usually is.
I am a fan of the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien. I find his stories of Middle-Earth and The Undying Lands absolutely fascinating. As I watched this movie, I had the feeling I was watching Valinor during the First Age when the elves where young and before Morgoth destroyed it. The visual effect is nothing short of stunning.
This is a pretty good film, well worth the price of admission. And you don't have to see it in digital 3D to enjoy it.
