| The Rolling Stone Magazine, Guitar World and other journals and websites have categorized instrumental Rock & Roll and Blues with historic and critical professionalism, but then, for me, guitar solos could drastically differ from one listener to another, unlike movies and books and even songs, in which they have, at least, two global lists of "all-times".
From where I come from, old Rock and Blues are almost unattainable, hence, my knowledge of Rock history is limited when compared with real journalists; however, I've been informed about what really matters in Rock music through a variety of great books and articles, and with an extreme effort, beside pirating, I've listened to great records of the golden era, from the groundbreaking emergence of The Beatles to the rebellious and experimental technique of the 90s to the present.
The subject here is not about the greatest songs I've listened to, for Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Eminem, Michael Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Roy Orbison, Bony M …. Weren't always guitar "maniacs" and they're at the top of my list of greatest artists of all-time; moreover what I'd refer to as the greatest guitar solos of all-time, is the reason why I fell in love with Rock music, and I can remember the first time I listened to Pink Floyd – the essential band that took me in Rock world – when I wrote my first short story while listening to the seven-minutes guitar solo opening of Shine on You Crazy Diamond. I detested the story but I'll never forget that solo for the rest of my life, and one of the most flagrantly shocking lists I've seen is RS's list of greatest 100 artists of all-time, where Pink Floyd wasn't there. Some may argue that it was a subjective view of art, but I think the band that sold more than 70 million copies ( The Dark Side of the Moon ) and was only second to Thriller, and created another genre of Rock music, is profoundly prejudiced for not being included in that list, not even at the 100th.
Over all, the sound of the six strings could be dream-like, psychedelic and sometimes euphoric like Gilmore's Comfortably Numb and Shine on You Crazy Diamond, and Duane Allman's Blue Sky, or sadly lugubrious and even elegiac like Hammett's Fade to Black and One, and Gilmore's A Great Day for Freedom, and then comes the type which is hard for me to classify because the genius and virtuosity in playing was various and mixed a lot of emotions like Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower, Page's Stairway to Heaven, Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Hammett's Master of Puppet and Orion, Gaines's Free Bird, Stevie Ray's Pride and Joy, Richard's Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Eddie Van Halen's Beat It, Knopfler's Sultans of Swing, Murray's Blood Brothers …. And heartbreakingly, the list goes on with forgetting unforgettable names, from Tomi to Young, Slash to the both "Berries'" ( Chuck and Joe ).
That sound is the dynamic force of Rock and Roll, it's the sound that made people fell and still falling in love with it for more than 60 years of great music, for our harsh, sad and happy times of our lives.
I could only list here the greatest guitarists of all-time. The top of the list belongs to those whose emotional power hit me the most. They are :
1- David Gilmore
2- Kirk Hammett
3- Mark Knopfler
4- Jimi Hendrix
5- Jimmy Page
6- Dave Murray
7- Duane Allman
8- Tony Lommi
9- Angus Young
10- George Harrison
11- The Edge
12- Keith Richard
13- Eric Clapton
14- Stevie Ray Vaughan
15- Steve Gaines
16- Joe Perry
These artists had immortal ten finger.
